Company Profile:
Founded in 1941, the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) is an international association representing the interests of professionals in surveying, mapping and communicating spatial data relating to the Earth's surface. Today, ACSM's members include more than 7,000 surveyors, ...
A device consisting of an electrical circuit in which capacitors, resistors, and similar elements simulate distances and angles in a surveying network, and which adjusts the values of these elements to obtain, by the method of least squares, adjusted values of the distances and angles. This kind of device is now obsolete and is rarely seen. Such adjustments are now done on computing machinery instead.
Industry:Earth science
The angular elevation of the Sun.
Industry:Earth science
That point, in the elliptical orbit of a terrestrial satellite, at which the satellite is farthest from the Earth's center of mass.
Industry:Earth science
An angle whose vertex is at the center of the Sun. The Sun's center of mass is usually specified or understood.
Industry:Earth science
An open bay having only one headland.
Industry:Earth science
The horizontal angle between the astronomical meridian and a line on the Earth. This term is preferred to the term true bearing which was used in early surveys.
Industry:Earth science
A lens which introduces astigmatism into an optical system. An astigmatizer is usually mounted so that it can be moved into or out of the optical path at will. In a sextant, an astigmatizer may be used to elongate the image of a celestial body into a horizontal line.
Industry:Earth science
A bay that conforms to the requirements of the law.
Industry:Earth science
The angle, at the center of attraction, from the ascending node to perigee, measured in the direction of motion of the orbiting body.
Industry:Earth science
Stream gaging, the angular difference between 90, a and the angle made by the current with a measuring section.
