Cryptographic hash function

An algorithm that takes any amount of data and transforms it into a fixed-size output value. For a cryptographic hash function to be useful for security, it has to be extremely difficult or impossible to reconstruct the original data from the hash value, and it must be extremely unlikely that the same output value could result from any other input data.
