A spike or pillar of compacted snow, firn, or glacier ice caused by differential melting and evaporation. Necessary for this formation are 1) air temperature near freezing; 2) dewpoint much below freezing; and 3) strong insolation. Consequently, penitent ice is most developed on low-latitude mountains, especially the Chilean Andes, but has been found in polar regions. Penitents are oriented individually toward the noonday sun, and usually occur in east–west lines. The term is derived from the Spanish nieve penitente (penitent snow), which is still widely used throughout the literature.

A spectral model in which the nonlinear terms in the governing equations are computed in physical space. Thus, for every model time step, some fields must be transformed to physical space where nonlinear terms are computed and then transformed back to spectral space where they can be applied. These nonlinear terms may consist of advection terms, pressure gradient terms, and energy conversion terms, as well as parameterized physics terms. This is the most common kind of spectral model, as it avoids the expensive computation of interactions among modes in spectral space.

A special case of Bénard cells with an aspect ratio of 3:1. It was first observed in the laboratory as convection in a shallow liquid, heated from below (as in a skillet) or cooled from above by evaporation (as in metallic paint). Such observations have similarities to convection in shallow cells in atmospheric layers as in cirrocumulus, with upward motion at the center, where cloud forms, and descending motion at the edges, which are clear.
