Inauguration
A formal ceremony that marks the official beginning of a new president's term in office. The presidential inauguration often features lavish ceremonies, in which the president publicly takes his/her oath of office in front of a large crowd of spectators. The first U.S. presidential inauguration took place in New York City in 1789 and marked the official beginning of George Washington's presidency. Presidents have used the inaugural address to offer his/her vision for the country's future.
Since 1901, the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies has been responsible for the planning and execution of the swearing-in ceremonies and the luncheon for the inauguration of the president of the United States at the U.S. Capitol.
