An optical system for transmitting or receiving light in which the primary mirror has a central hole into which light is reflected from a smaller mirror with a focus coincident with that of the larger mirror.
Industry:Weather
An interval of higher summer temperatures (2°–4°C higher) that followed the retreat of the last Pleistocene glaciers in North America and Europe, varying in age with location but often between approximately 5000 and 7000 years ago. The term is sometimes applied to warm and wet conditions that occurred during this time in some regions, although the warmth was probably accompanied by dryness in other regions.
Industry:Weather
An overhanging structure of ice or snow formed at a topographic edge (such as a mountain ridge) by wind-driven deposition. Cornices can be extremely hazardous to mountain climbers. Cornice release can also initiate avalanches.
Industry:Weather
An old term for particles that act as centers for droplet or ice particle formation in the atmosphere. Current usage differentiates between condensation, cloud condensation, and ice nucleus.
Industry:Weather
An instrument that measures the cooling power of the air. It consists of a metal cylinder that is electrically heated to maintain a constant temperature. The power required is a measure of the cooling power.
Industry:Weather
An interval in geologic time during which geologic, geomorphic, and climatic conditions favored large-scale glacier formation; a period that tended to produce an ice age or glacial period.
Industry:Weather
An instrument for photographing the corona and prominences of the sun at times other than at solar eclipse. An occulting disk is used to block out the image of the body of the sun in the focal plane of the objective lens. The light of the corona passes the occulting disk and is focused on a photographic film. Great care must be taken to avoid light scattered from the atmosphere and the lenses, and from reflections in the tube of the instrument. The coronagraph is used with a narrowband polarizing filter or with a spectroscope.
Industry:Weather
An instrument for measuring angles of inclination. In meteorology, it is used in conjunction with a ceiling light to measure cloud height at night. With it the observer measures the angle included by the illuminated spot on the clouds, the observer, and the ceiling light.
Industry:Weather
An infinite regular periodic set of points in space on which the atoms, molecules, or ions of an ideal crystal are imagined to be located. No real crystal is exactly congruent with its crystal lattice.
Industry:Weather
An instrument designed to measure quantities of heat; sometimes used in meteorology to measure solar radiation.
