“The mean pressure distribution (at sea level) for a time interval during which the positions of the stationary (steering) cyclones and anticyclones and the steering within a special circulation region remain essentially unchanged. ”
A Grosswetterlage is thus a certain large-scale circulation pattern that is mostly synonymous with a particular long wave regime.

A deep-water inlet, usually surrounded by mountains; specifically a submerged U-shaped valley carved out by glacial action. The fjord is characteristic of the coastal regions of Norway, western Scotland and Ireland, Greenland, Labrador, Alaska, British Columbia, southern Chile, the Antarctic peninsula, southwest New Zealand, and other high-latitude oceanic islands (Iceland, Spitzbergen, Kerguelen, etc. ).

A system of navigation by use of an arbitrary set of grid lines, as constructed to navigation by use of latitude and longitude. A grid navigation chart contains a set of straight lines (grid navigations) parallel to the 180° and 0° meridians. The lines are used like true meridians on a Mercator map. With respect to the grid meridians, great circles and rhumb lines are identical. Thus, some navigational problems are greatly simplified when grid north is used instead of true north. See aerologation.
Industry:Weather
That portion of the earth's atmosphere, above the planetary boundary layer, in which the effect of the earth's surface friction on the air motion is negligible, and in which the air is usually treated (dynamically) as an ideal fluid. The base of the free atmosphere is usually taken as the geostrophic wind level.
Industry:Weather
The presentation of a front on a synoptic chart as a frontal zone; that is, two lines, rather than a single line, are drawn to represent the boundaries of the zone.
