The globally integrated communications that provides for the collection and distribution of meteorological data within the World Weather Watch.
Industry:Weather
A navigation system based on a constellation of 24 low earth-orbiting satellites having highly accurate clocks and the computational capacity to triangulate positions near the earth's surface. Developed by the U. S. Department of Defense, the system has the capability of determining position to an accuracy of 30–100 m. If systems at two locations are used with long integration times, positions may be determined within millimeters of a known reference position.
Industry:Weather
A Russian satellite system designed to monitor central Asia and the Indian Ocean at 76°E longitude. The satellite reached geostationary orbit in November 1994, but has not produced reliable operational imagery.
Industry:Weather
A heat index that relates the development of plants, insects, and disease organisms to environmental air temperature. Analogous to growing degree-day (GDD), GDH is calculated by subtracting a base temperature from an hourly environmental temperature measurement and values less than zero are set to zero. A summation of hourly GDH is related to development. The temperature threshold (base temperature) below which development either slows or stops is species dependent.
Industry:Weather
The coordinated global system of meteorological centers and arrangements for the processing, storage, and retrieval of meteorological information within the framework of the World Weather Watch. It includes World Meteorological Centers, Regional Meteorological Centers, and National Meteorological Centers.
Industry:Weather
The GLM instrument on the GOES-R series of satellites will provide continuous lightning detection and mapping capabilities from geostationary orbit. The lightning sensor will detect both cloud-to-ground flashes and cloud flashes with a spatial resolution of 5-10 km.
Industry:Weather
A unit of frequency equal to one billion (109) cycles per second.
Industry:Weather
A Michelson interferometer being considered for geostationary sounding applications.
Industry:Weather
A suite of radiation sensors designed for MSG that monitor the earths radiation budget by simultaneously monitoring incoming solar radiation, solar radiation reflected at the top of the atmosphere, and thermal radiation emitted by the Earth.
Industry:Weather
A surface of constant atmospheric pressure that is related to a specific pressure datum (1013. 25 hPa) and is separated from other such surfaces by specific pressure intervals. It is conventionally given a numerical value to the nearest 1000 ft in units of 100 ft in accordance with the structure of the ICAO Standard Atmosphere. For example, the 500-hPa level is written as FL 180, the ICAO standard height being 18 289 ft.
