Maximum distance at which an observer can see and identify an object lying close to the horizontal plane on which he or she is standing.
Industry:Weather
Maximum volumetric rate at which water can be absorbed by a porous material, per unit area, under given conditions.
Industry:Weather
Methods of flood routing that are based on the combination of the continuity equation and a storage relationship.
Industry:Weather
Local name for a foehn wind in mountainous regions of Poland.
Industry:Weather
Longitudinal and lateral spreading (at a macroscopic level) of a solute being advected through porous media due to mechanical dispersion and molecular diffusion.

Literally, an instrument for measuring height; specifically, an instrument for measuring atmospheric pressure by determining the boiling point of a liquid at the station. The relationship between the boiling point of a liquid and atmospheric pressure is given by the Clapeyron–Clausius equation. The sensitivity of the hypsometer increases with decreasing pressure, making it more useful for high-altitude work. Consequently, hypsometers are frequently used for height estimation.
Industry:Weather
Line joining geographical points of equal insolation during a specific interval of time.
Industry:Weather
Line joining points of equal anomaly of a meteorological element.
Industry:Weather
Instrument for measuring total particulate matter in the atmosphere. Air is drawn into the instrument at a high flow rate of 1–2 m3 min−1 and passes through a filter bed that traps particles. The high-volume filter is the current standard recommended by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency for measurement of particulate matter in the atmosphere.
Industry:Weather
In U. S. Weather observing practice, a visible electrical discharge in the atmosphere. Lightning is the most common and important type, but types of corona discharge are also included. Compare electrometeor.
