Strong acid, formula H2SO4, formed as the end product in the oxidation of most sulfur compounds. Sulfuric acid is a major constituent of acid rain associated with fossil fuel combustion. As a consequence of its low volatility, it can lead to particle formation, and is a major constituent of cloud condensation nuclei and the background aerosol, including the stratospheric sulfate layer.
Industry:Weather
Stream that is separated from the underlying groundwater by a zone of unsaturated material. Compare insulated stream.
Industry:Weather
Stream of ionized gas, mainly hydrogen, continuously flowing outward from the sun, at very high velocity (≈ 400 km s−1 on the average) and with variable intensity. While passing near the earth the solar wind interacts with the magnetic field to produce various effects in the upper atmosphere (e.g., aurora).
Industry:Weather
Stream bed profile along the direction of flow.
Industry:Weather
Steppe region. See biochore.
Industry:Weather
Station where radiosonde observations are routinely made by use of packages with instrument and transmitting equipment carried aloft by balloons.
Industry:Weather
Station observation data as opposed to area information as might be derived from analyses of data from multiple points or remotely sensed.
Industry:Weather
Station at which upper winds are measured by optical tracking of a free balloon.
Industry:Weather
State of soil with regard to soil firmness and moisture content; ability to support equipment to work soil; soil temperature suitability for seed germination.
Industry:Weather
Spring that discharges from a saturated zone over a relatively large area.
