An instrument for measuring the speed or velocity of a current.
Industry:Earth science
A correction applied to measured differences of elevation to remove the tidal effect.
Industry:Earth science
(1) Any coordinate system in which surfaces or lines from the separate families constituting the system intersect at right angles. More often called an orthogonal coordinate system or rectangular coordinate system. (2) A Cartesian coordinate system in which the lines or planes intersect at right angles. To avoid confusion, the term should not be used in this sense. Use rectangular Cartesian coordinate system instead.
Industry:Earth science
The quantity a(1 - e²)/(1 - e² sin²φ)3/2, where a is the length of the semi major axis of a rotational ellipsoid, e is the eccentricity and φ is the geodetic latitude; often denoted by M or μ.
Industry:Earth science
A graphic representation of currents for a specified region; arrows at cardinal and intercardinal points of the compass show the directions toward which the prevailing current flows and the frequency with which this direction occurs for a given period of time. The thickness or pattern of the arrows may be varied to designate categories of speeds of currents.
Industry:Earth science
A detailed sketch showing how a sheet or page will look when printed.
Industry:Earth science
The ratio of the modulation in the image of a sinusoidal pattern at any spatial frequency to the ratio at zero frequency.
Industry:Earth science
A form of conveyance whereby whatever interest the grantor possesses in the property described in the deed is conveyed to the grantee without warranty of title.
Industry:Earth science
That part of the Earth which reacts elastically to all differences of stress below a specific elastic limit. Vening Meinesz set the limit at over 1000 kg/cm². The term's definition is inconsistent with the usual definition of rigid. A better term would be elastic crust.
Industry:Earth science
A table giving daily predictions of the times of slack water and of the times and velocities of the flood and ebb maxima.
