That component, of the difference between the location of a satellite's location as computed from theory and the location estimated from observations by the method of least squares, which is perpendicular to the direction of the satellite's velocity at a particular instant and perpendicular to the osculating plane at that instant.

A fan consisting of silt and other fine material deposited by a stream or river at its mouth or where the slope of the bed abruptly becomes less.

The amount by which the sum of the three angles of a spheroidal triangle exceeds 180o. In geodesy, spherical angles are used instead of spheroidal angles; the difference between the two kinds of angles is quite small even for the largest triangles and is considered negligible for ordinary triangulation.

Distance - measuring equipment which measures the difference between the time at which a pulse of sound was emitted and the time at which the echo is received, and converts this to a distance. This type of equipment is used primarily for determining depths, in which case it is known as echo sounding equipment or for determining underwater distances to vessels such as submarines. It has not found a geodetic application so far, although it has been proposed to use the Sofar channel to determine intercontinental distances.
Industry:Earth science
A systematic error, occurring in observations made with a repeating theodolite, caused by strains set up by the clamping devices of the instrument.
