Company Profile:
Founded in 1941, the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) is an international association representing the interests of professionals in surveying, mapping and communicating spatial data relating to the Earth's surface. Today, ACSM's members include more than 7,000 surveyors, ...
A formula for the volume of a prismoid. A typical formula, used for calculating the volume of a cut or fill shaped like a prismoid, is V = L (A + 4B + C)/6, in which V is the volume, A and C are the cross sectional areas of the ends, B is the cross sectional area at the middle of the cut or fill, and L is the length of a uniformly tapering part of the cut or fill. The formula is used, for example, in grading the routes of railroads or highways.
Industry:Earth science
The job of comparing what is shown on a set of aerial photographs with what is actually on the ground and thereby supplementing or clarifying what cannot be inferred from the photographs alone. Surveying is not a part of field inspection but, together with the field inspection, constitutes field completion.
Industry:Earth science
The vertical distance above sea level of an aircraft in flight. In the past, flight altitude has been used interchangeably with flight height. In aerial navigation however, the altitude of an aircraft is always stated in reference to sea level. In the interest of consistency, flight altitude should also be used only in reference to sea level.
Industry:Earth science
A camera in which the entire picture is taken through a lens system fixed relative to the focal plane and the recording medium. Contrasted with the continuous strip camera and the panoramic camera.
Industry:Earth science
Photographic film sensitive only to wavelengths of about 400 - 500 nanometers (the lower third of the visible spectrum)
Industry:Earth science
A frequency function which is a function of two variables.
Industry:Earth science
The slope of the foreshore, taken as the angle, at the high-water mark, between a horizontal plane and a line running seaward from that mark and more or less parallel to the foreshore.
Industry:Earth science
(1) The equipotential surface fitting an Earth completely in hydrostatic equilibrium. (2) The surface of an ellipsoidal solid having the same mass and rate of rotation of the Earth, which is in hydrostatic equilibrium, and on which the gravity potential is constant.
Industry:Earth science
A mathematical filter which uses previously computed values of the numbers as well as current values of the given set in selecting the representative function or algorithm.
Industry:Earth science
An elevation taken from the computation, in the field, of a line of levels.
