A quick test to identify types of ferrous metal. A sample of the metal is pressed against a grinding wheel, and the pattern of sparks thrown off indicates of the type of metal. When wrought iron which contains no carbon is held against the wheel, the sparks stream out in a straight line. The lines of sparks grow wider and brighter as they stream out behind the wheel. Mild steel, with its low carbon content, has a spark pattern similar to that of wrought iron, except some of the sparks have tiny forks on them. The spark pattern for tool steel with its high carbon content is similar to that for mild steel, except there are more forks in the stream, and the forked sparks form close to the wheel. Cast iron produces a large number of sparks close to the wheel, but they die out quickly. The spark pattern for cast iron is very short.
Industry:Aviation
A radar approach or vector provided by ATC to an aircraft in case of a malfunctioning gyro compass or directional gyro. Instead of providing the pilot with headings to be flown, the controller observes the radar track and issues control instructions such as “turn right/left” or “stop turn,” as appropriate.
Industry:Aviation
A radar approach system operated from the ground by air traffic control personnel transmitting instruction to the pilot by radio. The approach may be conducted with surveillance radar (ASR) only or with both surveillance and precision approach radar (PAR). Usage of the term GCA by pilots is discouraged except when referring to a GCA facility. Pilots should specifically request a PAR approach when a precision radar approach is desired or request an ASR, or surveillance, approach when a nonprecision radar approach is desired.
Industry:Aviation
A radar beacon reply displayed on a radar scope as an elongated target.
Industry:Aviation
A radar beacon slash representing the actual position of the associated aircraft. Normally, the control slash is the one closest to the interrogating radar beacon site. When ARTCC radar is operating in the narrow-band (digitized) mode, the control slash is converted to a target symbol.
Industry:Aviation
A radar circuit designed to correct for range attenuation so the echo intensity on the scope is proportional to reflectivity of the target regardless of range.
Industry:Aviation
A radar indicator in which the returns from the targets appear as bright spots at the locations they would have on a circular or fan-shaped map of the area being scanned. The range of the target is indicated by the distance of the spot from the center of the scope, and the bearing of the target is indicated by the radial angle between the spot and a vertical reference line. Some radar antenna rotate, and their PPI scopes are circular. Other antenna oscillate, and their PPI scopes are fan shaped.
Industry:Aviation
A radar indicator scope that displays a vertical cross section of targets along a selected azimuth.
Industry:Aviation
A radar system in which the transmitter and receiver use separate antennas and are usually located some distance from each other.
Industry:Aviation
A radar system installed in an aircraft to warn the pilot of the presence of any targets that could be on a collision course with the aircraft.
