A device that changes energy from one form into another. A microphone is an example of a transducer. It changes variations in air pressure into variations in electrical voltage. A radio speaker is another type of transducer. A speaker changes variations in electrical voltage into variations in air pressure, or sound.
Industry:Aviation
A device that changes its controlling function by the same increments throughout its complete range of movement. A potentiometer can be made in the form of linear control. The resistance of a linear potentiometer changes the same amount for each degree of rotation of its control shaft.
Industry:Aviation
A device that changes variations of light intensity into sound. A beam of light can be modulated by the output of a microphone. If this modulated light beam is shone on a photoelectric cell, its output current will duplicate the current produced by the microphone.
Industry:Aviation
A device that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy by rotating coils of wire through a magnetic field. As the conductors in the coils cut across the lines of magnetic flux, a voltage is generated that causes current to flow.
Industry:Aviation
A device that holds a piece of wood and a saw, so the saw can cut the wood at an angle to form a mitered joint. The wood used in a picture frame is cut in a miter box so that the ends match, forming a right angle and leaving no gap.
Industry:Aviation
A device that holds a tubular fuse and makes connections to both its ends. A panel-mounted fuse holder makes it easy to replace a blown fuse.
Industry:Aviation
A device that interrupts a flow of direct current and changes it into pulsating DC. An electromagnetic vibrator consists of an electrical relay whose contacts are held closed by a spring and opened by the pull of the electromagnetic coil. The contacts and coil are connected in series across a source of direct current.
When current flows through the coil, the magnetic field pulls the contacts open and stops the current. When the current stops flowing, the spring closes the contacts and current begins to flow again. The contacts vibrate between open and closed as long as the vibrator is connected to a source of direct current.
Industry:Aviation
A device that moves heat from one location to another. An air conditioning system is a form of heat pump. Heat from inside the aircraft cabin is absorbed by a liquid refrigerant. When the refrigerant absorbs the heat, it evaporates, or changes into a gas. The gas is then compressed, and the compression raises its temperature higher than that of the outside air.
The compressor forces the hot gas through the condenser, located outside the aircraft. Here, the gas transfers some of its heat to the outside air and condenses back into a liquid. Heat in this way is pumped from inside the aircraft cabin to the air outside the aircraft.
Industry:Aviation
A device that receives data, processes it, and then uses it in some type of output device. There are two types of electronic computers, digital and analog.
Industry:Aviation
A device that uses a piezoelectric crystal to change mechanical pressure or vibrations into electrical signals. When a piezoelectric crystal is physically distorted, a potential difference is created across its faces.
Crystal transducers are also called piezoelectric transducers.
