A flashing light on the vertical fin or belly of an aircraft. Anticollision lights increase the visibility of the aircraft, especially at night and under conditions of poor visibility.
Industry:Aviation
A flat board with low wheels on it. A mechanic can lie on a creeper while working under the fuselage or under a low wing of an airplane.
Industry:Aviation
A flat cast-iron plate built into a bench used for working sheet metal. Holes in the bench plate support stakes used to form sheet metal.
Industry:Aviation
A flat container made of thin disks of corrugated metal soldered together and used to sense changing pressure. When the pressure inside the capsule changes, the capsule expands or contracts, and the change in its physical dimensions is proportional to the change in the pressure.
Industry:Aviation
A flat leather or Teflon ring installed in the groove in which an O-ring or T-seal is placed. The backup ring is on the side of the seal away from the pressure, and it prevents the pressure extruding the seal between the piston and the cylinder wall.
Industry:Aviation
A flat metal disk with a hole in its center used to provide a smooth surface for a nut or the bolt head to seat against. Washers are also used to shim, or fill a space, between a nut and a surface to take up space if the grip length of the bolt is too long for the material being clamped.
Industry:Aviation
A flat panel hinged to the leading edge of some ailerons that produces a force which assists the pilot in holding them deflected. The balance panel divides a chamber ahead of the aileron in such a way that when the aileron is deflected downward, for example, air flowing over its top surface produces a low pressure that acts on the balance panel and causes it to apply an upward force to the leading edge as long as it is deflected.
Industry:Aviation
A flat spring hinged at one end and arched in the center. The load is applied to the center of the arch and is absorbed as the spring alternately straightens out and returns to its arched shape.
Industry:Aviation
A flat, disk-shaped valve used to control the flow of fluid in a round pipe or tube. When the butterfly valve is across the tube, the flow is shut off, and when it is turned parallel with the tube, the obstruction caused by the valve is minimum, and the flow is the greatest. Butterfly-type throttle valves are used to control the airflow through a reciprocating engine fuel metering system.
Industry:Aviation
A flat, horizontal surface of a body is said to be level when all points on the surface are perpendicular to a line which points directly toward the center of the earth.
