A form of extruded steel whose cross section is in the shape of the letter U. Extruded steel is formed by forcing it through a specially shaped die.
Industry:Aviation
A form of extrusion made by forcing cold metal through a die by striking it a hard blow. This blow comes from a punch driven at a high velocity.
Industry:Aviation
A form of fastener that allows one connected piece to rotate with respect to the other. Hinges are used to connect a door to the edge of an opening in a compartment or bulkhead. The hinges allow the door to swing, or rotate, open or closed. Ailerons are attached to a wing trailing edge with hinges so they can rotate with respect to the wing surface.
Industry:Aviation
A form of filter used with an electronic power supply to change pulsating direct current into smooth DC. A choke, or inductor, is the first element in the filter, and one or more capacitors are installed in parallel with the output of the power supply following the choke.
Industry:Aviation
A form of finishing material for fabric-covered aircraft made of a cellulose fiber dissolved in a mixture of acetic and butyric acids. Plasticizers, solvents, and thinners are mixed with the film base to give it the proper working qualities. Cellulose acetate butyrate dope, also called CAB dope or, more simply, butyrate dope, has become more popular than the older cellulose nitrate dope because it is far less flammable than nitrate dope.
Industry:Aviation
A form of finishing material for fabric-covered aircraft made of a cellulose fiber dissolved in nitric and sulfuric acids. Plasticizers, solvents, and thinners are mixed with the film base to give it the proper working qualities. Cellulose nitrate dope (generally called nitrate dope) is an excellent adhesive, but it is being replaced to a great extent by butyrate dope. Butyrate dope is not as good an adhesive, but it is much less flammable.
Industry:Aviation
A form of flow measuring instrument. A rotometer is made of a tapered glass tube holding a metal indicator float. The fluid whose flow rate is to be measured enters the bottom of the rotometer and flows upward, lifting the float. The taper inside the tube causes the pressure drop across the rotometer to remain constant as the rate of flow changes. Rotometers can be used to measure the flow rate of either gases or liquids.
Industry:Aviation
A form of fluid pump that produces a low pressure by moving fluid at a high velocity through a venturi. A jet pump can be used to remove vapor from fuel before it enters a fuel control unit. Some of the fuel from the main fuel pump is returned to the tank through a venturi (the jet pump). The venturi is connected to the top of the chamber in which the vapors collect. The low pressure at the throat of the venturi pulls the vapors out of the chamber and returns them with the fuel back to the tank.
Industry:Aviation
A form of forge welding in which the edges of two pieces of metal are heated red-hot and then pounded together with a hammer.
Industry:Aviation
A form of freewheeling clutch used in the rotor-drive system of a helicopter. The sprag clutch allows the engine to drive the rotor, but, when the engine power is reduced, the clutch allows the rotor to freewheel, and prevents it trying to drive the engine.
