A form of thrust reverser used on turbojet or turbofan engines. Thin airfoils or obstructions are placed in the engine’s exhaust stream to duct the high-velocity exhaust gases forward. These forward-flowing gases create a large amount of aerodynamic drag to decrease the landing roll of the airplane.

A form of thyristor, similar to a silicon controlled rectifier, except it controls current flow in either direction. A triac acts as two SCRs connected in parallel, with the anode of one connected to the cathode of the other. A triac does not conduct until a pulse of voltage is applied to its gate. But once it begins to conduct, it can be turned off only by reducing the voltage across it to a value low enough to stop the current flowing through it.

A form of toothed wheel, or sprocket, used to transmit motion from one shaft to another. Sprockets on both shafts are joined by a roller chain, and when one shaft is turned, the roller chain pulls the other shaft around.

A form of turbine engine igniter using a coil of resistance wire heated to a yellow-hot temperature by high-voltage direct current. Air is blown through the coil, and fuel dripping on it produces a torch-like flame that ignites the fuel-air mixture inside the combustors. Glow-plug igniters are effective for low-temperature engine starting.

A form of turbine that is rotated by air striking bucket-shaped turbine blades. An impulse turbine changes the direction of the air flowing through it. The energy that causes this change in direction spins the turbine. An impulse turbine does not produce a pressure drop across the blade as the reaction turbine does.

A form of twist drill normally used in a large drill press or a lathe. The shank of the drill is tapered and is held in the spindle by friction. The drill is removed by forcing it out with a tapered wedge driven through an opening in the spindle.
