The Petroleum Extension Service (PETEX) is a unit of the Division of Continuing Education at The University of Texas at Austin and has been training companies and individuals since 1944.
1. an injection of water prior to chemical flooding that is used to induce reservoir conditions favorable to the surfactant solution by adjusting reservoir salinity and reducing ion concentrations. A preflush may also be used to obtain advance information on reservoir flow patterns. 2. fluid injected prior to the acid solution pumped into a well in an acid-stimulation treatment; sometimes called a spearhead. Compare overflush.
Industry:Oil & gas
1. the inside diameter of a pipe or a drilled hole. 2. to penetrate or pierce with a rotary tool. Compare tunnel.
Industry:Oil & gas
a free-gas phase overlying an oil zone and occurring within the same producing formation as the oil. See reservoir.
Industry:Oil & gas
the method of producing a gas reservoir that is not associated with a water drive. Gas is removed and reservoir pressure declines until all the recoverable gas has been expelled.
Industry:Oil & gas
the lowest or deepest part of a well.
Industry:Oil & gas
drive energy supplied naturally (as a reservoir is produced) by the expansion of the gas cap. In such a drive, the gas cap expands to force oil into the well and to the surface. See reservoir drive mechanism.
Industry:Oil & gas
shortened form of blowout preventer. See blowout preventer.
Industry:Oil & gas
the portion of the drilling assembly below the drill pipe. It can be very simple, composed of only the bit and drill collars, or it can be very complex and made up of several specialty components.
Industry:Oil & gas
a drilling mud that contains entrained formation gas, giving the mud a characteristically fluffy texture. Gas cut mud may cause a lowering of mud weight.
Industry:Oil & gas
a system of conducting regular checks, routine maintenance and testing of equipment to lengthen the service life and to potentially permit replacement or repair of weakened or faulty parts before equipment failure results.
