This acronym stands for ATM adaptation layer. A layer in the model of endsystem asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) that defines the services provided by the ATM layer as required by upper layers. AAL in separate endsystems ATM communicates between them using a standard peer protocol. There are several categories of ATM adaptation layers, each corresponding to a major type of network traffic (for example, data, voice or video).
