Well, this is because good translation takes time, experience and good trainings. Someone who has translated millions of words obviously wants to charge more per word than a newbie who's just graduated from college. There are also other factors that affect translation rates such as cost of living and the wage consensus in the target country. Another factor that affects translation rate is the content itself. Marketing and highly technical content take longer to translate so the per word rate is usually higher.
