locating back

A flat surface, in an aerial camera, located parallel to but out of the focal plane by an amount equal to the thickness of the photographic film. The film is held against the locating back by a vacuum or air pressure so that the emulsion lies on the focal plane at the instant of exposure. Locating backs are usually of metal. They are perforated or slotted to allow a differential pressure to be built up or air to be removed to form a vacuum.
