Potential Hydrogen - measures the acidity or basicity of a solution. Solutions with a pH level less than 7 are acidic and those with a pH level greater than 7 are basic. Acids will harden the hair while basics will expand and soften the hair. Because of this, many shampoos and conditioners are pH balanced (pH level 4-6) to match the natural pH level of the hair and skin.
