Hand of God

This name was given to the goal scored by Argentinian football player Diego Maradona against England in the 1986 World Cup held in Mexico.

Maradona scored the goal with the outside of his hand which was unseen by the referee and subsequently counted as legit. In the post match press conference Maradona commented that the goal was scored "a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God" which lead to British tabloids coining the phrase "Hand of God". Argentina won 2-1 on that day and won the tournament overall after beating West Germany 3-2 in the final.
